The Southwest model is ideal for high capacity applications, particularly in dry regions with low quality water. The moist air generator is the most critical player in any moisture restoration strategy. It must generate a stable supply of warm, humid air. Application of moisture to cotton fiber with warm moist air dramatically changes the characteristics of the fiber. Static electricity is eliminated, hydraulic pressure at the press is reduced, the batt stays in the press box, bale tie breakage is eliminated, and when applied to dry seed cotton, staple is improved by up to 1/16". At Samuel Jackson, the moist air generator is called a "Humidaire Unit". Humidaire Units come in two different types and two capacities. There are Humidaire Units that burn gas and some that burn kerosene (sometimes referred to as illuminating paraffin, jet fuel, or simply "oil"). There is a standard capacity unit in each type, which is appropriate for small to medium sized cotton gin applications, and a premium model, more suitable to extremely dry conditions, or areas with a low quality fresh water supply. The fundamental design of the standard models has not changed much in the past 30 years, but the controls on the "14-Series" are appropriate for the 21st century. The Humidaire Southwest is a new design of gas-fired unit introduced in 2004 for challenging desert ginning conditions. It comes with the 14-Series control package as standard. The oil-fired Humidaire offerings are similar in function to the gas. There is a standard model, similar in size and shape to the standard gas model, and the new Humidaire Sahara, as the oil-fired counterpart to the Humidaire Southwest.
